چکیده

Stress fractures of the lower part of the fibula are common in athletes. This paper reviews fifty such injuries and discusses the natural history, signs, symptoms, radiographic appearances and treatment. All were seen in the Athletes’ Clinic at the Middlesex Hospital between 1952 and 1955, at which they represented an approximate incidence of 3 per cent of new patients seen. An excellent summary of the literature was given by Burrows (1948), who recorded twenty-four stress fractures of the lowest third or middle third of the fibula, and a larger number in the uppermost third. Since then ten more have been published, eight in children, by Griffiths (1952) and two by Richmond and Shafor (1955). The high incidence in athletes has not been noted before.

Gravity Reduction View: A Radiographic Technique for the Evaluation and Management of Weber B Fibula Fractures

Background: While various radiographic parameters and application of manual/gravity stress have been proposed to elucidate instability for Weber B fibula fractures, the prognostic capability of these modalities remains unclear. Determination of anatomic positioning of the mortise is paramount. We propose a novel view, the Gravity Reduction View (GRV), which helps elucidate non-anatomic position...

Minimally Invasive Surgical Approach to Distal Fibula Fractures: A Technique Tip

Wound complications following ankle fracture surgery are a major concern. Through the use of minimally invasive surgical techniques some of these complications can be mitigated. Recent investigations have reported on percutaneous fixation of distal fibula fractures demonstrating similar radiographic and functional outcomes to traditional open approaches. The purpose of this manuscript is to ...

Outcome of Distal Both Bone Leg Fractures Fixed by Intramedulary Nail for Fibula & MIPPO in Tibia

Background:  Fractures of the distal third of the tibia are mostly associated with a fibular fracture that often requires fixation. The preferred treatment of distal tibial fracture is the minimally invasive percutaneous plate osteosynthesis  (MIPPO) procedure. However, there are no clear cut guidelines on fixation of the fibular fracture and currently most orthopedic surgeons use a plate osteo...

Distal Fibula Fractures in National Football League Athletes

BACKGROUND Despite the frequency of distal fibula fractures in elite athletes and the significant potential impact on the athletes' season and future careers, little data exist characterizing the epidemiology of these injuries or, more importantly, return to competition. PURPOSE To (1) evaluate the incidence of acute distal fibula fractures in National Football League (NFL) athletes, includin...

Repetition of an unusual stress fracture in an anorexic man: a case report.

Stress fractures of the fibula commonly occur distally in runners, whereas stress fractures of the proximal fibula are uncommon and typically occur in jumpers. Furthermore, it is rare for a stress fracture to be repeated in the same bone. We report a case of a repeated stress fracture of the proximal fibula in a male runner with abnormal gait that primarily involved excessive pronation. Unusual...
